Spring in Southwest
The SWBID kicked off reopening the parks this spring with our Spring in Southwest three-day event.
First up was celebrating the Southwest Library's First Birthday party. 6D ANC Commissioner Edward Daniels brought the funk with excellent music while families danced, decorated birthday cupcakes, blew bubbles, and ate popcorn served by MPD. Kids had a blast making chalk art, creating crafts, and adorning the Library's paper birthday "cake" with Happy Birthday wishes and drawings. This celebration wouldn't have been possible without the Southwest Library and Friends of the Southwest Library, who brought this idea to life.
Disco at the Duck Pond was “far out” with the Ambassador team setting up real and inflatable floating disco balls to get into the groove. DJ Adrian Loving jammed out with 70s beats and more while neighbors danced into the evening, and the party-goers could refresh with disco-themed mocktails and grub from Swizzler's food truck. We can't forget the wildly popular photo-op vintage VW duck bus everyone had a thrill posing for pics in front of. Tired and sore from dancing, we said goodnight to the ducks and peaced out to prepare for the next fun-filled day.
Saturday's Block Party at Lansburgh Park was a neighborhood hit with a misting tent to beat the heat, community partners, great music, and delicious food. Neighbors joined from all over to hear Clarence "The Blues Man" Turner turn up with his band and share a meal with King Ribs BBQ. We still have BBQ sauce on our faces and drool thinking about it.
Thank you to all our neighbors who celebrated our incredible Southwest parks with us, shared kindness, and above all––had a fantastic time.
